AUSTIN, Texas – After 35 years of bringing comedy to the Austin community, Cap City Comedy Club is no more.

The club had planned on temporarily closing its doors at the end of March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but as the months stretched on, that closure became permanent.

According to the club’s website, the club was originally founded under the name “Laff Stop” in March of 1986 but was renamed in 1996.

“We are so thankful that the city of Austin allowed us to thrive for 35 years as Austin’s premier comedy club. There is not a better comedy scene in the country — from our incredible and wonderful staff to the amazing local comedians, and to all of the touring/celebrity comedians who performed at our club and kept us on our game — we love you all and thank you for the 35 great years at 8120,” said co-owner and manager Margie Coyle in a written statement.

8120 is a reference to the comedy club's former address at 8120 Research Blvd.

While the club was known for giving a stage to local comedians, notable names that visited its stage include Ron White, Ellen DeGeneres, DL Hughley, Dave Attell, Beth Stelling, and Joe Rogan, according to the club’s website.
