NATIONWIDE – As schools nationwide begin reopening, a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association says more than 90,000 children tested positive for the novel coronavirus during the last two weeks of July.

What You Need To Know

  • 97,000 kids tests positive in just two weeks in July

  • Data comes as some schools have started reopening

The report included data from 49 states and New York City, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and Guam.

Data from Texas was not included in many of the statistics because the state only reported age distribution for 8 percent of cases, according to the report. Additional data for New York state outside of New York City was also not available.

The new numbers show there has been a 40 percent increase in the number of children testing positive for COVID-19 with 97,078 cases reported between July 16 and July 30.

Eight states reported how many children were tested and analysis of those numbers show children make up between three and 11 percent of total tests within those states.

This report comes at the same time districts are either opening their doors or making their final decisions on how to do so safely.

It’s not known yet how the virus affects the health of children or whether there could be any long-term health impacts. There are also studies looking into whether kids can spread the virus just as effectively as adults.
