SAN ANTONIO – Schools and other educational institutions such as museums have been ordered to shut their doors amid the coronavirus pandemic, but many of these places are now offering online learning resources.

Below is a list of where teachers, parents and students can access these tools:

SeaWorld San Antonio

Parents, students and teachers can explore hands-on, creative resources including Classroom Activities, Teacher’s Guides, Animal Bytes, Animal Info Books, and a Saving a Species Video Series, many of which are hosted by SeaWorld San Antonio’s own Chuck Cureau.

Materials can also be accessed by going directly to SeaWorld.org, or through our portal at SeaWorld San Antonio Education.

San Antonio Zoo

Audiences can go to the zoo’s new media page to find a collection of videos, including a live webcam of jellyfish, animal chats, Nature Education/“Zoo-It-Yourself” DIY videos, and Zen Zoo yoga. Check out the zoo’s Facebook page Monday – Friday’s at 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. for live animal chats and 10:30 a.m. for Zen Zoo yoga live.

San Antonio Water System

SAWS has implemented a school-age strategy that uses water as a catalyst to promote science and civic responsibility through presentations, field investigations, service opportunities and other resources. All are free of charge and customized to be age appropriate.

San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture

April is National Poetry Month and the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture, along with 2020-2022 San Antonio Poet Laureate Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson, invites the community to celebrate poetry with dozens of events taking place throughout the city this month. BiblioTech

BiblioTech has leveled reading material for students available on its cloudLibrary shelves, with additional educational resources and enrichment material for students on the website. This includes ebooks and materials in Spanish.

Because of the increased need for home internet, all internet hotspots currently in circulation have been reactivated for two weeks – so anyone who is not currently connected, but has a hotspot will be able to use it for the normal circulation period. A plan for curbside device check in/check out at BiblioTech branches for hotspots and kindles is under review for implementation.

Additionally, online chat hours have been expanded from noon to midnight, Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturday, to provide assistance to patrons with their account, or if they have resource questions.

Available for free to all Bexar County residents, registration is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at https://bexarbibliotech.org/.

Spurs Sports Academy

Ballogy Inc., a software company, and Spurs Sports Academy launched a new feature in the Ballogy App that encourages young athletes and coaches to stay active and compete with each other by playing basketball in the comfort of their own home.

The app is free for download on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

DoSeum

The children’s museum has added a Do It At Home page to its website.

The tools on this page include:

  • Ask a Doer video series
  • Storytime
  • Health and Wellness

San Antonio Museum of Art

Find lesson plans can on the museum’s website under Educator’s downloadable resources. There are three different lesson plans available. The plans touch on math, science, social studies and art, and all include art projects as well as discussion topics.

The museum’s new offerings also include an art-centered storytime on its Facebook page.

McNay Art Museum

Resources can be found the on Educators page.

The McNay offers STEAM-oriented lesson plans and virtual tours with a list of questions to consider about the featured artworks. The museum is also offering #McNayFromHome activities on their Family page.

The Magik Theatre

Families can go on an adventure into the nation of storytelling with Pirate Pete or participate in a fun Madlib and learn about an actor and his/her family, or practice a calming yoga session with Magik Maker Natalie, during one of the company’s regularly scheduled programming on Facebook or Instagram.
