SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Independent School District announced the Cliff Martinez Memorial Scholarship on Friday, in honor of the officer who died trying to end a fight earlier this month.

  • Off-duty SAISD was working security at IHOP
  • One of the men fighting ran over officer, killing him

According to police, the off-duty SAISD police officer was working security at the IHOP on December 21 and attempted to break up two men who were fighting, managing to get them outside.

The fight continued in the parking lot. The officer was assaulted and left on the ground and one of the men got into a vehicle and ran Martinez over. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Both men were later caught and arrested.

The scholarship was established to support SAISD students in Police Explorer programs who are pursuing a career as a police officer.
