SAN ANTONIO -- Underneath the I-35 bridge near the Historic Pearl in downtown San Antonio, the Murals at Midtown looks as fresh as it did when one year ago artists painted the large outdoor gallery.

  • 16 San Antonio artists collaborated

“I feel good about it,” said artist, activist and professor Suzy Gonzalez

Gonzales is one of 16 San Antonio artists from all backgrounds who collaborated to create what has become a highly visible landmark in the heart of the nation’s seventh-largest city.

“Oftentimes when you’re a studio painter, it really feels like you really have to try and get folks to come to your show, and that’s like a really big part of it, the promotion,” said Gonzlez. “But this, it promotes itself.”

Sponsored by the San Antonio Street Art Initiative, in November of last year, each artist came armed with a brush, paint, and self-styled creativity. Bridge-supporting columns served as their easel and canvas.

For her piece, Gonzalez said she wanted to highlight San Antonians active in the local community.

“I really wanted to focus on local women who are doing amazing things," she said.

Gonzalez chose two.
