Aftermath services is holding a nationwide competition, and the two officers were selected to be among the finalists.

"He’s a rare breed for the job," Vain said.

The energetic dog is not your average police pup. Rocko is an adopted, red nose pit bull all the way from Indiana.

"Pit bulls have a bad rep and we’re out here showing that depends on the training and the love they get, they can be just as successful as any other breed," said Vain.

Rocko has been sniffing out drugs and fighting crime with the department since 2016. The duo is the first K-9 unit with the department. The department hopes to expand, and the prize money would help pay for training equipment.

"We also want to build a little training for him with kennels, and things like that to expand our program in the future as the city grows," said Vain.

From leashes to toys, a lot of the unit’s equipment is now coming out of this officers own pocket.

"It would mean everything, not just to myself, the dog, and the city," said Vain. "But, it's going back to the training and equipment to serve in the community."
