SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department is investigating the death of a firefighter Tuesday morning after he was hit by a vehicle while at a call.

  • Happened around 6:45 a.m.
  • Firefighter died from a “traumatic arrest”

The San Antonio Fire Department was responding to the 500 block of Like Oak Street for reports of an “electrical call” at approximately 6:30 a.m.

SAFD confirms that firefighter Greg Garza was hit by a commercial van while exiting a firetruck.

He was taken to the hospital but died at 8:04 a.m. from a “traumatic arrest.”

Garza’s family is being assisted by SAFD Command Staff as well as the Union’s Family Assistance Committee.

San Antonio Mayor ron Nirenberg issued the following statement Tuesday afternoon: 

"Our hearts break today for the loss of one of our own first responders. Greg Garza of the San Antonio Fire Department succumbed to his injuries after being struck by a vehicle early this morning during an emergency response. Mr. Garza was a son of San Antonio and honorably served as a San Antonio Firefighter for 17 years.

"San Antonio's loss today is a tragic reminder of how much our first responders and their families sacrifice to keep us all safe. Our thoughts, prayers and hearts rest with the Garza family and our Firefighters today. Let us lift them up."
