SAN ANTONIO -- When it comes to poverty, San Antonio ranks first among the nation's most populous cities. That's according to the 2018 American Community Survey, along with information from the U.S. Census Bureau.

  • One-of-a-kind apartment complex
  • Will be built in New Braunfels
  • Hope to help those struggling in Comal County

In response, the San Antonio Food Bank is stepping in to help families in need.

On Friday, the nonprofit announced the building of a new one-of-a-kind apartment complex. The $7.5 million housing unit will be built next to their food bank in New Braunfels.

It's being built to assist families who can no longer afford the rising cost of living in Comal County.

The apartments will be one part of a larger program helping families out of poverty.

"I know that we can reduce the amount of poverty in our community and move our families to wellness and a healthy place," said Eric Cooper with San Antonio Food Bank.

The money used to build the apartments is still being raised. The food bank hopes to open the complex in 2021.
