BEE CAVE, Texas – State Democrats are hoping to make big gains in next year’s election and they’re reaching out to voters outside of major urban hubs.

  • 3 candidates spoke at Bee Cave forum
  • All hoping to unseat Republican Senator John Cornyn
  • Super Tuesday is March 3, 2020

During a forum Tuesday hosted by Lake Travis Progressives, three Democrats from across the state who are hoping to unseat incumbent Republican Sen. John Cornyn took their message to Bee Cave.

“I want to do what I call a full reform, not just conditional reform. Education, criminal justice, and it comes through us paying attention to our youth. Our youth are not our future, they’re our present. And we need to take care of them right now,” says Democratic candidate Michael Cooper.

Before facing off against Cornyn, though, they need to stand out from a crowded field to clinch the nomination.

Some candidates are hoping their message of pragmatism will do that.

“Two years ago I ran for governor and I ran on a platform of structural change. So now I’m trying to push a little further than that and start to share some ideas on how to actually get things accomplished,” says Democratic candidate Adrian Ocegueda.

Voters have until March to decide who will make it on the November ballot, and many hope that same ballot with President Trump at the top will give them the upper hand.

“You have Donald Trump then you have folks like John Cornyn, who’s basically been a waterboy for Donald Trump even when it’s not in the best interest for the state. I think people here in the state really want someone who will stand up and fight for the people and I think I have a proven track record as a fighter and I am looking forward to taking on John Cornyn after the primary,” says candidate Chris Bell.

California and Texas, the two most populous states in the United States, are holding their primaries on Super Tuesday, meaning that more than one third of the U.S. population is expected to vote on March 3.
