NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — UPDATE: (August 9, 2019 12:35 p.m.) The second zebra that was captured has died as well, the New Braunfels Police Department confirmed Thursday. According to police, the zebra escaped its pen Thursday around 10:40 a.m. Officers and animal control searched the area and located the zebra's body on the ranch property from which it originally escaped. There was no immediate word on what caused the zebra to die. 

UPDATE: (August 8, 2019 10:16 a.m.) The first zebra that was captured on Wednesday died after it was returned to its owners. The second zebra that escaped has been returned to its owners with precautions to prevent another escape.

(ORIGINAL STORY) Police in New Braunfels say they’ve caught one of the loose zebras, but another is still on the run. 

According to police, the zebras got loose this afternoon after swimming across the Guadalupe River, and made their way across the city. One was later tranquilized and safely recovered.

Police haven’t said where they are from, just that they are not from the Animal World and Snake Farm. 

The NBPD helicopter team assisted with the capture.
