A man was inside the rail car cleaning crude oil when something caused the residue to spark. Firefighters say they had trouble rescuing him due to the small opening that leads into the car.

Additional agencies were called in to help assist in the rescue operation.

Gary Garza, 39, was killed according to Elmendorf Chief of Police Marco Pena. In addition to Garza, one other crew member is in critical condition. That member was said to have 60 percent of his body burned. Four others are also being treated for minor injuries or burns.

The cause of the explosion remains unclear but OSHA is investigating.
