SAN ANTONIO - If you've driven around downtown lately you've probably noticed a lot of work happening in San Pedro Creek.

  • First part of project finished last year
  • Second part scheduled for 2021

The next segment of the Culture Park is taking shape.

The first part of this project was finsihed last year and the second part is scheduled for 2021. There's a lot going on to make the second segment of Phase 1 of the San Pedro Creek Culture Park come to life.

Stretching from Houston Street to Nueva Street, it will include three new bridges, more than 75 trees, a sculpture garden, five murals, a 250 foot waterfall, and a community space around the historic Alameda Theater.

"One of the most exciting things that's happening today is citizens are coming back to live in the central city and beginning to understand where we came from, what we're about," said Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff.

Work is coming along, but it hasn't always been easy. Engineers say working around the bridges is difficult, but carefully working around 300 years of history underground hasn't been easy either.

"Any time we excavate below six inches we have to have an archeaologist monitor that works and we've found thousands of artifacts along the creek as well as historial structures. We found part of the foundation for the original Presidio wall that we had to go around, [and] found a canon ball. A lot of that stuff is going for curation at UTSA," said San Antonio River Authority Senior Engineer Kerry Averyt.

From here the project will continue toward the south end of the creek. The next three parts are still in planning.
