SAN ANTONIO -- The City of San Antonio moved forward with some stricter rules for dockless scooters on Thursday.

City Council approved amendments for a pilot program it started a few months back.

There are about 12,000 scooters on the streets and sidewalks of San Antonio, all launched in the past three months. With two new companies about to launch, it'll push that number to 14,000.

New Rules:

  • Scooters are only allowed to be used from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Can temporarily be removed to allow for city maintenance, construction and special events.
  • Vehicles in prohibited locations (River Walk, parks, plazas, including Alamo Plaza) can be collected by the city without notifying the company.

There also will be designated parking zones. Therese rules are in addition to rules already in place:

  • Must be 16 years or older, only ride on sidewalks and streets, and parked in spot that doesn't block.
  • Must follow traffic laws.

It seems most riders do not know about the new rules.

"I'm a tourist and I don't know that there’s rules and regulations for the scooters,” one man said.

They city said there's a PSA already around town and pavement decals marked.

“All we know is what the app told us when we first downloaded the app and scanned it to start our ride,” one woman said.

The city is already talking about possible amendments for after the pilot program, around the middle of April.

Since the start of the program there's been over 1.4 million total trips, with a trip average less than a mile.
