SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio football fans are ready for professional football to return to the Alamo City, as evidenced by the tailgate they've organized for a team that hasn't even played a game yet.

  • San Antonio Commanders play inaugural game Saturday
  • Fans planning pre-game tailgate party
  • Fans expected from all over the country

Before the San Antonio Commanders take the field for the first time on Saturday, fans are planning a free potluck-style tailgate in the Alamodome's parking lot.

One of the organizers, RC Woods, is also a co-host of the Command Post, a podcast about the team. Woods said they're expecting fans from all over the country, and has even spoken to fans in the UK and Canada. Many of the tailgaters are part of a Commanders fan group on Facebook, which just recently grew to a thousand members.

This might be a big fan base for a new team in a new league, but it's still small enough for Woods to offer to personally help any of the fans traveling in from out of town.

"So the whole fan base, I call the fan-ily, like not family but fan-ily, sort of like fans and family. We're just really helping each other out, and making sure that they have a good place to stay at a hotel, if they need anything for the tailgating,” Woods said. “And we're going to start it off, we already have a menu going on and we're going to share and we're just going to have a good time."

The tailgate is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. in lots B and C at the Alamodome. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
