SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- January 23 is National Pie Day, an annual celebration of pies that started in the mid-1970s.

The unofficial holiday was started by a nuclear engineer and teacher Charlie Papazian in Boulder, Colorado, who declared his birthday to be Pie Day. Since the mid-1980s, the American Pie Council got onboard with the idea and sponsored the so-called “holiday”. It is not to be confused with Pi Day on March 14, the day that celebrates the irrational number.
