SAN ANTONIO – The official industry travel numbers were released this week and San Antonio International Airport reached an incredible milestone for an airport of its size.

  • Second consecutive year of record-breaking numbers
  • Celebration included mayor and city manager
  • Airport has added numerous pieces to accommodate travelers

It is the first time in the airport’s history to achieve 10 million passengers, with 10,044,411 passengers traveling through SAT. In 2017, the airport exceeded 9 million passengers for the first time.

A press conference with Mayor Ron Nirenberg, City Manager Sheryl Sculley, and Aviation Director Russ Handy kicked off the celebration at the Plaza de Armas Gallery in downtown San Antonio.

Every month in 2018, passenger growth exceeded the record for the previous year setting a pace to reach the highest yearly passenger statistics in the history of the airport. Four additional flights were added to existing routes, and 15 flights were launched to brand new destinations in 2018.

“A lot of factors contributed to this amazing milestone: the economy, demand for domestic and international travel, hosting wonderful events like the NCAA Men’s Final Four and our great relationship with air carriers,” Russ Handy, Aviation Director for the City of San Antonio, said.

In San Antonio’s Tricentennial year, SAT celebrated the opening of a new state of the art Consolidated Rental Car Facility, the opening of a short term parking garage, a new gas station, and established live music and art gallery programs.

“In 2016, we were tasked to embark on an air service development plan that targeted 15% capacity growth in five years. We exceeded that goal in just two years. None of this could have been possible without the partnership between our community, airline partners and airport team all working together towards one goal,” Brian Pratte, Chief Air Service Development Officer, said.
