SAN ANTONIO – ARTS San Antonio announced on Friday six-time Grammy award winner and three-time Latin Grammy award winner, Chucho Valdés and his Trio: Jazz Batá, will be performing in Laurie Auditorium at Trinity University in February.

Valdés is a pianist, composer, and arranger. He is originally from Havana, Cuba and started his first jazz group at 15 years old.

In the early 1970s, Chucho formed the landmark group: Irakere. This group has been referred to as a “seminal musical laboratory” where historic innovations in both Afro-Cuban jazz and Cuban popular dance music were created.

In 2018, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, was inducted in the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame, and received a DC Jazz Festival Lifetime Achievement Award.

He is known as an influential figure in modern Afro-Cuban Jazz.
