CEDAR PARK, Texas —An online petition to name a new Leander ISD school after Myles Hutcheson has garnered nearly 6,000 signatures.

The 17-year-old died in a car crash while driving to Vista Ridge High School earlier this month.

LISD board members met for their regularly scheduled meeting Thursday, where they discussed the naming of the 27th elementary and 9th middle school. This process started in October and the board received 450 name submissions.

Community members spoke during the comment period about who the schools should be named after, including the creator of the petition, who urged the board to postpone their vote.

"Myles led an incredible life in his short 17 years. His kindness and concern for others, his inclusion of everyone, his natural ability to pull the wallflower into the party, and his genuine heart touched the lives of nearly everyone who crossed his path," Stephanie Jagen said.  "In response, the community has launched an #LLM or 'Live or Love like Myles' campaign to keep his legacy alive."

The board did not discuss Hutcheson in the meeting, and voted to name the new schools Larkspur Elementary and Stacy Danielson Middle School, after a former dance teacher.

Board member Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia said even though some names were not chosen, that doesn't mean they can't be revisited in the future.
