New Braunfels police on Wednesday responded to a disturbance call at a home on Stonecrest Path, near Frances Street.

When officers arrived, they saw no criminal act in progress, but rather a man who was behaving erratically. The man has been identified as 37-year-old Bryan Boyd. They say Boyd was obviously suffering from an acute medical issue.

Officers tried to calm Boyd down and were able to gain his voluntary compliance to place him into handcuffs. An officer called paramedics to the scene while they continued to try to calm Boyd down.

When paramedics arrived, Boyd again became agitated and erratic and had to be further restrained on a stretcher to keep him from thrashing his arms and legs.

Authorities say Boyd stopped breathing several minutes later. Paramedics began life-saving measures. Boyd was taken to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels where he was pronounced dead.

County officials have ordered an autopsy with a full toxicology report.

As is standard with custodial deaths, the Texas Rangers are conducting an independent investigation.
