SAN ANTONIO – Churches, schools, and unions expressed opposition to the Center City Housing Incentive Policy on Wednesday.

  • City Council set to vote Thursday
  • COPS/Metro Alliance called for delay
  • Program launched in 2012, put on hold by mayor

San Antonio City Council is set to vote on the proposal Thursday.

Members of the COPS/Metro Alliance gathered outside council chambers to call the vote to be delayed until next year. The group was concerned that the passing of a new C-CHIP would be bad for taxpayers and bad for neighborhoods.

The City said plans are moving ahead, after a year of public input and studies.

“There’s been a lot of public input. We’ve heard and being called to make several revisions to the program over the last six months. We’ve responded to each and every one of those concerns,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said.

“When the City forgoes hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to inventively developers to build housing, it’s a housing policy and should be therefore treated as such,” Linda Davila with COPS/METRO Alliance added.

The program was originally launched back in 2012, but was placed on hold a year ago by the mayor because of affordability issues.
