TEXAS – Despite losing the Senate race to Republican Ted Cruz, fans of Beto O’Rourke took over Twitter trends on election night calling for him to run for president in 2020.

  • #Beto2020 trending
  • Ted Cruz won the Senate race
  • O'Rourke's national attention is still holding strong

O’Rourke gained national attention during his campaign, appearing on The Ellen Show and gaining celebrity endorsements from some big names, including Texan Beyoncé.

The Democrats regained control of the House of Representatives, and there were blue gains in Texas as well. For the first time ever two Hispanic women in Texas, Democrats Sylvia Garcia and Veronica Escobar, were elected to Congress.

In the close race, Cruz pulled ahead with 50.9 percent of the vote. Although the Republican was able to keep his seat, the race was one of the closest a Democrat has come to winning in recent years in Texas.

Many Twitter users are drawing a comparison between O’Rourke and Abraham Lincoln, who lost a Senate race two years before he was elected president. The hashtag #Beto2020 has gone viral with thousands of people nationwide showing their support.

Currently the GOP holds the majority in the U.S. Senate. A Texas Democrat has not won a statewide office since 1994.
