SAN MARCOS – A woman died on Thursday night after crashing into the back of an 18-wheeler on Interstate 35 northbound.

  • Car went underneath 18-wheeler
  • Woman may have been texting before crash
  • Speeds of vehicles undetermined

According to San Marcos officials, emergency units responded to a major traffic accident in the northbound lanes of I-35 at the Hwy 123 exit around 10:30 p.m.

When the units arrived, they found a black 2018 Nissan Altima had struck the back of an 18-wheeler trailer and went under the trailer. The driver, Jayde Sherbert, was pronounced dead on the scene by Justice of the Peace Jo Ann Prado. The truck driver was uninjured.

Sherbert was a resident of San Marcos and a former Texas State University student.

Investigators believe she had been texting just before the crash. They have yet to determine the speed of the vehicles involved.

At the time of the accident, northbound traffic had been slowed because of road construction.

Two traffic lanes were blocked until about 4:30 a.m. Friday while investigators worked the scene.

The SMPD Collision Investigation Team continues to investigate.
