SAN ANTONIO — Robert E. Lee High School's recent name change means North East ISD is auctioning off items with the old name.

It's part of the campus' transition into Legacy of Educational Excellence.

The district launched its online auction Monday. There are nearly 1,700 pieces of memorabilia up for grabs to the highest bidder.

The district says the intent isn't to raise money.

“The idea and the intent was to help the alumni,” Aubrey Chancellor of NEISD said. “We heard so many of them that they wanted an opportunity to have these items. We know that they feel very passionately about the name. We know that they really wanted of history so to speak.”

The school board decided to change the name of Robert E. Lee High School after local and national outrage over Confederate monuments. Proceeds will go back into the district’s general fund.

The auction closes July 30.
