CRYSTAL CITY, Texas -- Former Crystal City, Texas, Mayor Ricardo Lopez on Monday was sentenced for his part in a corruption probe that nearly crippled the city’s government.

Lopez was sentenced to 97 months in a federal prison, three years of supervised release and ordered to pay more than $24,000 in restitution.

A federal jury on June 26, 2017, convicted Lopez of bribery, conspiracy to commit bribery, wire fraud and theft of honest services. Also convicted was former city manager and city attorney William James Jonas III.

Trial testimony revealed Lopez and other city officials used their positions to enrich themselves by soliciting and accepting bribes from people seeking to do business with Crystal City.

Jonas was sentenced to 420 months in federal prison.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI with the assistance of the Texas Department of Publics Safety Criminal Investigations Division, the Texas Rangers and the San Antonio Police Department.
