BEXAR COUNTY -- The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday issued a warning about a phone scammer who is claiming to be an official of the department.

The office said the caller claims his targets are in contempt of court and that there has been a citation issued for failure to appear.

During the calls, the office said, a request will be made for payment via money order or gift card. In at least one instance, a target was asked to pay through a kiosk.

If you receive such a call, you are urged to hang up and call the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office at 210-335-6000. The department said it will never call about criminal matters and will not take payments in the form of a gift card.
