LEON VALLEY, Texas - Leon Valley firefighters are teaming up with Meals on Wheels San Antonio to make some house calls.

The idea is to visit elderly people in the community on a more regular basis, to hopefully prevent an injury and cut down on 911 calls.

One in four senior citizens in San Antonio is food insecure, which means they don't know where their next meal is coming from.

Firefighters say they want to check in on these folks as a form of preventative health care.

Meals on Wheels representative Amanda Kern says caring for the community's elderly is a team effort.

"We really appreciate all the collaboration we can get from different organizations like the Leon Valley Fire Department to help with preventative care as much as we can. (Seniors) not just rely on ourselves to provide nutritious meals, but also to help with whatever we can so they can get to know the community resources that are out there," said Amanda Kern of Meals on Wheels.

The hope is that Leon Valley Fire Fighters will tag along on Meals on Wheels routes every month so they get to know the community's elderly before there's an accident or injury.
