EDINBURG, Texas -- A third person in Texas has been infected with the Zika virus after being bitten by a local mosquito this year.

Health officials said a McAllen resident appears to have been infected by a mosquito in Hidalgo County. Another local transmission was reported in Hidalgo County earlier this year and there was also one in neighboring Cameron County.

The Texas Department of State Health Services said Rio Grande Valley residents should take precautions because it's often warm enough for mosquito activity to continue through much of the winter.
