SAN ANTONIO -- A little rain, or even a lot of rain, isn't going to stop Texas high school football.

Rain or shine, it's Texas high school football season.

“Kids don’t want to be in the gym, they don’t want to be inside, they want to come outside and practice,” said Che Hendrix, Boerne High School head football coach.

As long as there is no lightning, don't expect to find any dry pads or helmets at any of the local schools.

“They probably with it was mud, this is when kids usually say ‘why are we playing on turf, let’s go play in the mud,’” said Keith Kaiser, Champion High School head football coach.

Turf practice fields, which both Boerne and Champion use, allow schools the luxury of practicing outdoors even in the rain, because they don't have to worry about ruining a field that has to be ready for Thursday or Friday night games.

“Every kid wants to come out and play football in the rain, so the energy’s been off the chart, but getting them to come out here and listen, that’s been a little bit of a different story,” Hendrix said.

One upside to the rain is that it brings cooler temperatures. After weeks of camp with temperatures above 100 degrees last month, afternoon practices with temperatures in the 70s and 80s are a welcomed change.

"I'll take this over that heat and humidity any day, so that's been probably the biggest silver lining, just how nice it's been outside," Hendrix said.

Practicing in the rain gives the teams a chance to get used to playing with a slippery ball, soaked turf and the feeling of being wet.

“You know, I think we always self-internalize and say it’s happening to us, but it’s happening to both teams,” Kaiser said.

Last weekend, Boerne had a 90 minute weather delay during their loss to Media Valley. This is a situation coaches say is almost impossible to prepare for ahead of time, as it affects players both mentally and physically.

Unfortunately, there's still a high chance the San Antonio-area teams will see rain again during this weekend's games.
