While high school football has been one of the few bright spots in Texas during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, some unsportsmanlike conduct marred a game Thursday night.

According to the Associated Press and several other news sources, things turned ugly at a game between the Edinburg High Bobcats and the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High Bears.

Emmanuel Duron, identified by The Monitor as Edinburg’s defensive star, was ejected for shoving an opposing offensive lineman and attempting to tackle the Bears’ quarterback after the whistle had blown the play dead.

Heated words were exchanged between Duron and referee Fred Garcia. Following the ejection, Duron ran onto the field and plowed into Garcia, knocking him to the ground. The incident was caught on tape.

According to sources, Garcia was checked out for possible injuries but walked off the field by himself. He did not return.

Duron was escorted out of the stadium by Edinburg police officers who were working security.

According to The Monitor, Duron is also a standout wrestler.

There was no immediate word on charges stemming from the incident.
