Mid and high level clouds continue to linger over South Central Texas. This will keep temperatures cool through Friday afternoon with highs in the middle 50s for most of the region. West of the I-35 corridor could see some brief clearing which will allow temperatures to reach near 60.

Saturday will be the warmest day for the near term. Skies should clear and with south winds, highs should climb to the low 60s. Things begin to change Saturday evening as the first in a series of cold blasts works into Central Texas.

Some light rain is possible Saturday night as temperatures fall to the low 40s overnight. North winds will gusts to 25 mph.

The forecast gets tricky for New Year’s Eve. Another strong cold front early Sunday pushes a Polar outbreak into Texas as an upper level disturbance passes overhead. Forecast models are still uncertain but it looks like temperatures will be cold enough to produce some isolated sleet and freezing rain Sunday night and Monday morning, primarily north of a line from Austin to Giddings. The chance for wintry weather will be low, but still non-zero.

Once the disturbance passes, freezing temperatures – low and middle 20s – could last from Monday morning until Wednesday. That’s 36-48 hours below the freezing mark, so take precautions to protect pipes, plants and pets in that timeframe.
