AUSTIN, Texas -- For about a dozen officers an entire shift was dedicated to introductions. It was part of the Operation Blue Wave Initiative.

  • Austin police met with community members Monday
  • Part of Operation Blue Wave Initiative
  • Project is designed to strengthen bonds between police and community members

It's an effort by the Austin Police Department to have officers build trust and connections within the communities they serve.

The first "wave" happened in northeast Austin near LBJ High School where officers got on foot and knocked on doors in that neighborhood.

Some residents said a simple handshake goes a long way.

"Them coming out being positive, talking to us the community. The community is always first, so them being engaged with the community that opens up our hearts and minds to more things that can happen,” said resident Nyeka Arnold.

Operation Blue Wave Initiative also has officers go out and talk to the homeless about resources available to them.
