AUSTIN, Texas – Whether or not you consider yourself to be superstitious, there are a few foods to eat on New Year’s Day which folklore claims will make 2019 a healthy and wealthy year for you.

Superstition aside, these foods could also serve as a nice way to start the new year after a late night of celebration:

1. Black-eyed peas, Greens, and cornbread: This meal is a tradition that originated in the Southern United States and has since caught on across the country. Some say the tradition to eat this meal goes as far back as the Civil War. As the saying goes, “Peas for pennies, greens for dollars, and cornbread for gold”.

2. Pork: Eating a nice glazed ham or a pork cop on New year’s Day is said to bring good luck throughout the year because the animal moves forward when it eats.

3. Grapes: An easy addition to your New Year’s Eve party cheese platter. This food is especially popular in Spain, as Spaniards eat 12 grapes as the new year arrives, one grape for each stroke of midnight. Each grape represents a month of the calendar ahead. Count your grapes as you eat them, as a bitter grape may foreshadow a tough month in the new year.

4. Round Cakes and Cookies: A ring-shaped or any other circular sweet is said to bring a full circle of luck to those that eat them.

5. Long Noodles: Noodles are said to bring extra-long life to the eater, especially if you can eat them without a break in the middle.

6. Rice: This simple starch is thought to bring fertility and wealth.

7. Fish: Along with the saying that there are so many other fish in the sea, this food is thought to bring abundance in the new year.
