TEXAS – Traveling during the holidays can be very stressful, ruining what is supposed to be a time of rest and relaxation, but there are several ways you can minimize the hustle and bustle of holiday travel.

Packed planes, long lines, and wild weather delays may confront travelers, especially during the upcoming holiday season. AAA Texas has several tips on how you can have a safe, stress-free journey during the holidays.

If you plan to fly:

1. Update your smartphone. Be sure it is loaded with the important contact information for your travel agent, hotels, airlines, and other loyalty program numbers.

2. If you are flying, download your airline’s app or use another to track flight status:

  • FlightAware and FlightStats If your flight is delayed or canceled, the apps will often let you know before the info is posted at the gate.
  • GateGuru This will show terminal maps and restaurants.

3. Have a backup plan. Learn in advance what hotels are near the airport where you might be stranded. If you’re a member of the airline’s frequent-flier program, say so. In case of trouble, airlines typically take care of their elite fliers first.

4. Know your rights. If a delay or cancellation is the airline’s fault (a mechanical or crew problem), the airline should give you a voucher for meals and a hotel stay. If weather is to blame, you’re responsible for those costs.

5. Travel with only carry-ons. You’ll be flexible if there’s a change of plans.

6. Send gifts ahead via FedEx or UPS.

If you plan to drive:

1. Ensure your vehicle is properly maintained. If maintenance is not up to date, have your car and tires inspected before you take a long drive.

2. Map your route in advance and be prepared for busy roads during the most popular times of the year. If possible, consider leaving earlier or later to avoid heavy traffic.

3. Keep anything of value in the trunk or covered storage area.

4. If you’re traveling with children, go with them on bathroom breaks and give them whistles to be used only if the family gets separated.

5. Have roadside assistance contact information on hand, in case an incident occurs on the road.

6. In case of an emergency, keep a cell phone and charger with you at all times. AAA and many other companies offer smartphone applications that enable motorists to request help without making a phone call.
