AUSTIN, Texas -- Tuesday, voters will head to the polls to pick a replacement for the state Senate seat vacated by convicted felon Carlos Uresti.

The district covers parts of San Antonio's West, South and East Sides, then stretches across West Texas to 16 other counties.

It's a crowded field. There are eight candidates seeking the position. The Republicans are Pete Flores, Jesse "Jay" Alaniz and Carlos Antonio Raymond. There are four Democrats -- Pete Gallego, Roland Gutierrez, Charlie Urbina Jones and Tomas Uresti. The lone Libertarian on the ballot is Tony Valdivia. Gallego is a former Democratic Congressman and considered a front-runner. But Flores, a retired Texas Game Warden, is hoping to pull an upset in the Democratic-leaning district.

And he's getting some help from some of Texas' top Republicans.
