AUSTIN, Texas — Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has laid off employees at the corporate level, according to the theater chain's PR group, Fons PR.
The group said the company has laid off 15 employees due to the downturn in box office sales. The employees make up about 9% of the company’s workforce.
Although Alamo Drafthouse has yet to officially comment, Fons PR said the roles were eliminated as part of restructuring within the organization. It also added that no further layoffs are expected on the corporate side.
This was not a decision made by Sony, Alamo Drafthouse’s parent company, but entirely by Alamo Drafthouse, according to the PR group. Sony acquired the Austin staple in June of 2024.
At the time, Sony said it would continue to operate all 35 of its cinemas across 25 cities under the Alamo Drafthouse umbrella.
While it wasn't noted by Fons PR, Variety reported that an unspecified number of venue employees were laid off at Alamo's theater chains. That was attributed to the yearly post-holiday slowdown and mostly involved part-time workers.
Like many theaters that are up against at-home movie streaming and the effects of the pandemic, Alamo Drafthouse has experienced setbacks. Domestic box office revenues in 2024 fell to $8.75 billion, down from 3.3% in 2024 and 23.5% from 2019.
