AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas System Board of Regents’ Academic Affairs Committee approved a new program on Wednesday that would allow free tuition for some students.

The Promise Plus program will provide undergraduates whose families have an adjusted gross income of $100,000 or less with free tuition, beginning next fall, according to a news release from the board.

The program will be for students attending any of the nine academic institutions in the University of Texas school system.

The vote on Wednesday was preliminary with the full board vote happening on Thursday.

“To be in a position to make sure our students can attend a UT institution without accruing more debt is very important to all of us, and as long as we are here, we will continue our work to provide an affordable, accessible education to all who choose to attend a UT institution,” said Kevin P. Eltife, the chairman of the Board of Regents.

Promise Plus is not a new concept to UT campuses. At its inception in 2022, the endowment help the UT El Paso campus increase no-cost tuition opportunities to 450 additional students in 2022.

Following Thursday’s vote, the Promise Plus plan will immediately infuse $35 million directly to the campuses to make the financial aid benefit possible for students.

To qualify for Promise Plus, students must be Texas residents, enrolled full time in undergraduate programs, and apply for applicable federal and state financial aid.
