AUSTIN, Texas — If any more proof was needed that Austin is now a soccer town, Thursday’s announcement should put that to rest.

Q2 Stadium, home of Major League Soccer’s Austin FC, in June will host the world champion U.S. women’s national soccer team. The team will take on Nigeria in an exhibition match beginning at 8 p.m. on June 16.

Ticket information will be released by U.S. Soccer in the coming weeks, a new release says.

“We are extremely excited for U.S. women’s national team to play the first soccer match at Austin FC’s Q2 Stadium,” said head coach Vlatko Andonovski. “The development of Austin FC has been impressive and fun to watch, and the way the community has embraced the club is inspiring. We can’t wait to play there and feel that energy.”

The match, which will be televised on ESPN2, will mark the debut of the U.S. women’s national team in Austin. Not long after the match, the team will be trimmed down to an 18-woman Olympic roster.

Austin FC will play its home opener three days later, on June 19. They’ll take on the San Jose Earthquakes at 8 p.m.

Anchored by stars including Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, the U.S. women’s national team on June 7, 2019, defeated the Netherlands 2-0 to become the first to become the first team in history to win four Women’s World Cup titles.
