Brutal chill abounds!

After seeing a mix of cold rain and sleet with patchy ice reported on a few roadways during the night, Austin dipped to a sunrise low of 31. At the coldest, it felt as frigid as 12 degrees at daybreak, and afternoon highs in the low to mid 40s will likely feel more like 30s.

Bundle up and be prepared: we're heading to even colder territory tonight with widespread 20s! In order for that to happen, clouds will have to continue to clear out of our skies and winds will also have to diminish, which is indeed the forecast.

Plan for a hard freeze in suburbs & protected valleys of the Hill Country, where thermometers might show low 20s around sunrise on Wednesday. In town, it'll likely be a light freeze with metro lows in the mid to upper 20s.

Will we break any records?  Well, it's going to be a fairly close call.  At the Austin airport, the standing record for 11/13 is 28 (from 2014.)  In the metro, the Camp Mabry record is 27 from 1911.

While we might see lots of sunshine Wednesday morning, the afternoon hours are expected to turn cloudy again as a new Pacific disturbance movers across South Texas.

It brings an improved 50 percent chance for showers to our region, with what could be some 1/4" to 3/4" rain totals during the day on Thursday. Our latest models show the heaviest rain falling south of the Capital City, mostly during the first half of the day.

We're planning for plenty of sunshine on Friday and Saturday along with comfortable daytime 60s. Temps will get closer to 70 by Sunday when a weak cold front will be in the picture. It offers a very slim 20 percent rain chance.
