AUSTIN, Texas — According to reports, beloved Austin singer-songwriter and visual artist Daniel Johnston died Tuesday night.

Reports say Johnston’s physical health had declined in the past few years.

Johnston moved to Austin from West Virginia in the early 80s. Known for his eccentricity, most of Johnston’s musical recordings consists of cassettes recorded in his home.

For many Austinites, Johnston is perhaps best known for painting the Hi, How Are You?  mural on a building at 21st Street and Guadalupe. The building housed the Sound Exchange record store at the time.

Johnston was 58 years old.
