AUSTIN, Texas -- A 9-year-old girl donated money from her birthday, Christmas, and a lemonade stand to disabled veterans.

  • Girl saved money for months
  • Gave money to American Legion Post 83

Valery Ann Arriola has been saving up her money for nine months. At first, her parents didn't even know.

"It was actually surprising that she had all that money saved up. I actually didn't know that every time I give her money, she'd put it up and I thought she would go spend it on something else," said Joseph Arriola.

She was inspired after seeing several TV shows about the sacrifices veterans made during war. On Saturday the family drove from out of town for a fundraiser at the American Legion Post 83, so Valery Ann could hand over her hard-earned $240.

The proceeds of the benefit and raffle will go to updating their building and helping disabled veterans at the Veterans Affairs building.

"I just wanted to help out veterans because they have been saving our country and helping us," said Valery Ann.

Valery Ann's dad said he is still shocked by her selflessness.

"Most kids nowadays are only concerned about what they can get and it's always about them, them, them. It's kind of surprising me that she is willing to help somebody else out," he said.

The American Legions showed their gratitude by making her an honorary member with her own biker vest.
