AUSTIN, Texas — The City of Austin Ethics Review Commission found that a former aide to Mayor Steve Adler violated several city code provisions.

The Commission voted 6 to 1 with a few members absent during their meeting finding Frank Rodriguez violated provisions of city code, which doesn't allow employees to do business with entities that they have a substantial interest in.

The Austin American-Statesman first reported on the issue about a year and a half ago, which sparked an independent investigation. They looked into email correspondence between Rodriguez and Latino Healthcare Forum, a nonprofit he founded and resigned from before taking a job with the mayor.

The Statesman reports even after stepping down, Rodriguez continued to receive checks from the nonprofit, which had contracts totaling more than one million dollars with the city. The Statesman found Rodriguez received more than $17,000 in 2015 and nearly $20,000, the following year.

During the meeting Wednesday, Adler testified that he did not know that Rodriguez was accepting payments. Rodriguez argued he didn't know he did something wrong and the payment came from previous work he did for the nonprofit.

After the vote, the commission agreed to issue Rodriguez a letter of admonition, which means his violations of city code were either minor or unintentional.

Adler says he is "glad the process has run its course."
