AUSTIN, Texas – The city is working on developing more than 330-acre of parkland in East Austin.

  • 300 acres of park being developed
  • City opened John Trevino Jr. Park
  • Still needs input from community

On Saturday, the City opened up the John Trevino Jr. Metropolitan Park to the public for the first time. The city of Austin is looking for the public's help in brainstorming ideas for the land, which has sat vacant since it was purchase in 2003.

The 2018 bond will help fund the project, but the city still needs input from the community on how to move forward.

"This is our first formal meeting with the community at large. What we've heard so far is that we are wanting to see more of a passive recreation, not a whole lot of active, like for instance ball fields," said Ricardo Soliz, Park Planning Division Manager.

The property was mainly used for farming and ranching until three years ago.

"Until we know what is going to be included in the master plan, we know the cost of this, but it's definitely going to be in phases because we have about to 2 to 3 million dollars to at least start with, some part of phase one," said Soliz.

Monitor the city's park page for details about the next community input meeting.
