AUSTIN, Texas – The Transportation Security Administration at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is showing travelers how they can legally fly with a firearm.
In Texas, those who are licensed gun owners can legally travel with a firearm and ammunition, however, there are numerous rules to follow to ensure the safety of others.
How to Travel With a Firearm:
- All firearms must be unloaded in a locked hard-side container packed in a checked bag only. Only the passenger should have the key or combination to the lock unless requested by TSA to open it.
- Declare firearm and ammunition to the airline when checking a bag at the ticket counter. Travelers will be a given a firearm declaration slip to fill out.
- Know the firearm laws where you are traveling to. While it may be legal in Texas, the firearm laws might be different in another state.
- Firearms, magazines, clips, bolts, ammunition, and firing pins are all prohibited from carry-on bags. All of these items must be secured in a box along with the unloaded firearm.
