AUSTIN, Texas – Drivers should expect major delays on Interstate 35 this weekend for the demolition of the St. Johns Avenue Bridge.

  • Lanes of I-35 to close
  • Closure from Friday to Monday
  • Will be reduced to two lanes

The Texas Department of Transportation started working on I-35 to improve entrances, exits, ramps and shoulders in January 2018.

This weekend is a big part of this major project that will create three new flyovers at I-35 and US Highway 183 by mid-2021.

Drivers are no longer able to cross I-35 using the St. Johns Avenue Bridge. Crews are demolishing half of the bridge and setting beams for a new Highway 183 flyover.

Drivers will be directed to use the frontage roads and U-turns to cross I-35 at both the 183 and 290 East intersections.

That closure will last several months, as the bridge is demolished and rebuilt.

The bridge remodel is part of the larger construction project that is shutting down several lanes on I-35 throughout this weekend.

Beginning Friday night, both northbound and southbound I-35 will be reduced to 2 lanes in each direction between Rundberg Lane and Highway 290 East.

The northbound entrance ramp north of US 290 will also be closed along with the Rundberg Lane exit ramp north of US 183. The southbound entrance ramp south of Rundberg Lane will close as well as the southbound US 193 southbound I-35 flyover.

Although the Saint Johns Avenue bridge will be closed for several months, these lane closures are only through the weekend.

Drivers are asked to find alternate routes while traffic is shifted to the northbound side of I-35. The lanes are expected to open again Monday morning, June 3, at 5 a.m. The next traffic shift is planned for June 28 through July 1.
