SAN ANTONIO -- The YMCA, San Antonio Police Department and the Bexar County Sheriff's Office are teaming up to keep teenagers active and safe this summer.

  • Teens get a free Y membership for volunteering
  • Must volunteer for 3 hours per week
  • Program runs June through August

The Y VolunTEENS program gives teenagers a free Y membership as long as they complete three hours of volunteering or service learning a week. They'll have the chance to connect with their peers, discover new interests and build relationships with law enforcement.

Organizers say it's a great way to keep them engaged, especially those who are unsupervised during the summer months.

"None of us want to see kids left to their own devices when they're bored," said Sandy Morander, YMCA president and CEO. "So what better way to partner with Bexar County and SAPD and the YMCA to provide enriching opportunities to keep kids active, engaged, learning, giving back and setting them up for future success?"

The program runs from June 1 through August 31. In addition to Y Volunteens, the Y will continue to host monthly teen nights which are open to the community.
