AUSTIN, Texas -- The state's embattled elections chief has resigned.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, Secretary of State David Whitley submitted his resignation Monday.
It happened as the Texas Senate gaveled out Monday without confirming Whitley, who served for less than half a year and whose tenure was caught up in controversy over a failed attempt to review voters rolls for noncitizens.
The secretary of state is constitutionally required to leave office immediately if the Senate does not confirm them during the legislative session.
