AUSTIN, Texas – A man killed in a crash into a tree after veering off Interstate 35 in North Austin has been identified.

On Sunday, May 12 at 11:34 p.m. a Hyundai Elantra and a Toyota Camry were both traveling northbound on the 12100 block of I-35. The Camry driver attempted to change lanes the Elantra was in, causing the driver to lose control of his car.

Both of the cars slid off I-35 and the Elantra collided with a tree. The driver of the Elantra, identified as 52-year-old Patrick Leonard Ervin, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Camry driver was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

This is the 29th fatal traffic crash in Austin this year. At this time in 2018, there were 22 fatal crashes.
