AUSTIN, Texas – A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting near the Pennybacker bridge in West Austin on Sunday.

  • Man killed by officers
  • Incident began as domestic dispute
  • Witnesses tried to save wife from husband

The incident began at 5:15 p.m. with a domestic dispute between a husband and a wife in a car on the 5400 block of North Capital of Texas Highway. A chaotic turn of events ensued that resulted in several witnesses calling police.

The woman jumped out of the car and tried to summon another driver while her husband drove his car northbound in the southbound lane and plowed into another car.

The husband then jumped out of the car, chased his wife, and dragged her off the road. Witnesses tried to help by stopping their cars and pinning the husband down, but he managed to escape.

Police arrived and located the man. He told the officer that he had a gun prompting two officers to fire several shots. The man died at the scene.

Police Chief Brian Manley says they plan on continuing their investigation on Monday after spending all night processing the scene. Part of that process includes locating the weapon involved in this incident.

Two police officers have been placed on administrative duty.

The woman remains in the hospital in serious condition, but she is expected to be okay.
