PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- The growth and success of The Domain has started a trend.

  • Pflugerville planning mixed-use development
  • One of a couple other projects planned in neighboring areas
  • Will likely be reviewed by city planning officials

Communities surrounding Austin all want to build similar style development. Pflugerville is the latest place with plans for a mixed-use mega development, joining Round Rock and Cedar Park as areas wanting these types of projects.

We asked a local expert if there is enough growth in the area to support all of these similar developments. John Doggett, a senior lecturer in the McCombs School of business, said the Austin City Council can make it difficult for new companies to come to Austin and that’s been a benefit for the outlying areas like Pflugerville.

“The surrounding communities are not afraid to make an investment in infrastructure and they’re going to continue to grow,” Doggett said.

He also does not see the bubble bursting for the economy in Austin or the surrounding areas anytime soon.

“Austin and Central Texas are uniquely positioned to continue to grow even with a downturn statewide or across the country,” Doggett said. “So much money, so much talent and so many jobs are moving here from other parts of the country.”

As for the project in Pflugerville, it would sit on both sides of the State Highway 130 toll road and just south of Typhoon Texas Water Park and Hendrickson High School. It’s still in the early stages of consideration and will likely be reviewed by city planning officials in the coming months.
