AUSTIN, Texas – A new larger transportation platform is coming to downtown Austin to accommodate more passengers and more trains.

  • Goal to accommodate more people
  • Will open in 2021

Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority, along with city leaders, are breaking ground on a new MetroRail platform on Monday. Construction will begin on the new platform to keep up with the demand.

The downtown train platform will be moved one block east between Neches and Red River. The new platform won't open until 2021.

Rail officials said the new station will have a larger platform that can accommodate more people, and more trains with a plaza right across from it.

"The goal is to have better frequency. In the afternoon, these trains are standing room only," said David Dech with Capital Metro Rail Operations.
